I agree with John that the private beta mode has become an obsession in the social network world.

That being said, it is really essential for the like/diss team to let the member community expand in a controlled way since the site is still quite new and we need to fine-tune performance and scale up the site as we grow.

This private beta thing for social network sites is really strange. Since everything is beta anyway nowadays, why doesn't you all open up your site to anyone.

There are a lot of site that have been required invitations and are in private beta mode too long for one to believe that it is about beta testing, e.g. Jaiku, grandcentral.com, Twine, mash.yahoo.com.

Thanx for the tip. Didn't know about the autoSelect option, it is not in the documentation but I can see it is in the source.

We'll try it out in the next deploy. It's always good to keep your sponsor's wife satisfied.

your sponsor's wife might be interested in the autocompleter's 'autoSelect' option. eg:

new Ajax.Autocompleter(
'autoCompleteTextField',
'autoCompleteMenu',
'',
{autoSelect:true});

Hi Eric,

It might be that we had an overhead in what we included. We put together a data table with a context menu and data source binding, a tab set, used the connection manager for XHR and some event and util methods. We ended up around 500k uncompressed. That was with the whitespace stripped -min files.

I will check if we were using some unnecessary JS or CSS includes.

If you like YUI, take it another step further and have a look at ExtJS (formerly known as YUI-Ext). It has adapters for JQuery and Prototype and set the bar for speed on DOM queries. www.ExtJS.com
